Apparently the Madrid bombers could contact each other without being detected by simply sharing the same email account and not sending their messages.

Unsent drafts were -at least up to now- not picked up by European authorities, according to a Spanish judge on the case.

There's no mention in the International Herald Tribune article of wether this very simple trick fooled the Americans as well.
